Chapter 9

“So, you slept in his bed and nothing happened?” Abigail asked.

“That’s what I said.”

“I don’t believe you! He was so interested in you at dinner last night.”

“Believe what you want. I’m telling you that’s all that happened,” I said.

Abigail had known something was up within five minutes of her and I being together. I was distracted, to say the least. Aiden had been gone when I woke up this morning, and I barely had enough time to change clothes and meet Abigail in the library before our training session this morning.

“So, you just walked into his room and he offered to sleep on the floor? What even happened after you left last night? What was wrong with your own bed?”

“Someone took it upon themselves to dump blood all over the room, completing it with the word ‘bitch’ smeared over the walls. Jax and I spent hours cleaning it up. I guess my presence here isn’t going over as smoothly as I had hoped.”

I hadn’t even heard Aiden walk into the room. The hair on the back of my neck was the only thing that alerted me of his arrival. “What did you just say?” he asked. Abigail and I both jumped at the boom of his voice.

“How long have you been standing there?” she asked.

Aiden shut the library door behind him and stalked over to where we were sitting. His fists were tight at his sides, and his jaw flexed as he got closer. “Long enough to hear that someone vandalized your room last night. Why didn’t you tell me? If someone is trying to attack you, I should know about it. This is my castle now, Ruby. Anyone who disrespects you is disrespecting my reign!”

“Will you calm down,” I said. “Nobody tried to attack me. It was harmless.”

“Harmless?” he asked. “Where do you think a random citizen gets enough blood to cover an entire bedroom? And why do you think someone would do something like that?”

“I don’t know, Aiden. I was a little preoccupied with cleaning it up.”

He opened his mouth to speak but shut it again. An emotion I couldn’t quite read flashed over his face.

“Do the people here really hate you that much?” Abigail questioned. “That’s a little extreme, if you ask me.”

“I knew some of the citizens would be resistant,” Aiden responded. “I just didn’t think they would lash out like this.”

“Do you have any idea who would do something like this?” Abigail looked at me. “That seems like a lot of work to go through just to call you a bitch.”

“It could be anyone who loved King Xavier. The list of possibilities is very long.”

“It could also be anyone who sees you as a threat now that I’ve announced I’ll be taking a queen,” Aiden said.

“Why would someone see me as a threat? That doesn’t make any sense.”

“It does if they’ve seen you practice magic together. We have no idea who’s living in this castle right now. Any one of these soon-to-be-queens could be feeling jealous over it,” Abigail said.
